Phone gets very hot
Getting a little warm in hot weather is normal, but if the phone is too hot to hold or shows a warning, try the fixes below.
Steps
- Don't use it heavily while charging
Gaming or video editing while plugged in heats the phone the most. Let the phone rest while charging and keep it in a well-ventilated spot.
- Remove thick covers
Thick, closed-back covers trap heat inside. Take the cover off during heavy use (games, long calls, navigation).
- Close background apps
Close apps from the recent-apps view, and restrict background activity for heavy apps in Settings > Apps.
- Check brightness and hotspot
Full brightness and the mobile hotspot both load the CPU. Keep both on only when needed.
- Update the software
Check Settings > System > Software Update — some updates improve thermal management.
- Battery or charging issue?
If the phone only gets hot while charging, try a different charger/cable. If it still heats up, get the battery checked at a service center.
Tips
- A phone left on a car dashboard in direct sunlight can overheat in minutes — use an AC vent mount in the car.
- Recording video at 1080p instead of 4K produces less heat.
Warning: If the battery swells from heat (back cover lifting), turn the phone off immediately and take it to a service center — never try to open it yourself.
