WhatsApp backup won't restore
Getting a new phone and finding your WhatsApp chat history missing is stressful. These steps work in 90% of cases.
Steps
- Check the same phone number and same account
Use the same SIM number on the new phone as on the old one, and make sure you're logged in with the Google account the backup was made on (check the account name in Settings > Google).
- Confirm the backup on the old phone
Is the old phone still working? Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and check the 'Last Backup' date. If no backup was ever made, there is nothing to restore. Tap 'Back Up' and create a Google Drive backup.
- Restore on strong Wi-Fi
Restore on Wi-Fi only — a large backup can stall or stay incomplete on mobile data. Install WhatsApp, verify your number, tap 'Restore', and keep the phone on-screen (don't lock it).
- Keep free space on the phone
Restoring needs twice the backup size in free phone storage. If storage is full, delete some files and try again.
- Check Google Drive space
Check drive.google.com to see if there is space left in Drive. A full Drive can block both creating and restoring backups.
- If no backup exists
If no backup was ever made on the old phone, the chats can't come back — but for the future, turn on Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and select 'Daily' backup so this doesn't happen again.
Tips
- Never factory-reset the old phone without verifying the backup first.
- For large video backups: keep 'Include videos' off so the backup stays small and fast.
